Listening to Zella Day gives you instant wanderlust. Her spellbinding voice and story-telling lyrics come through in the way she dresses. A self proclaimed gypsy, Zella embodies the role through her spirit and style. We sat down with the young artist to see what inspires her.
Name: Zella Day Kerr
Describe your style:
Over the course of three years since moving from Arizona to California, it has become a little bit more clear what my style is exactly since I have access to vintage stores, flea markets, designer. I’m living in one of the biggest cities in America and I come from one of the smallest places, a town of 7,000. So I’d say my style is like '60s psychedelic Western.
So its a little Arizona influenced?
Yeah a little Arizona. It took me getting away from the place that I grew up to really appreciate where I’m from. I definitely incorporate some of that Western edge in to my clothing with my turquoise, boots, cowboy hats and leather belts. I have a belt that this cowboy made for me when I was like six and it says my name on it. It says Zella Kerr which is my last name, so it says ZK on the belt buckle.
Who’s your style icon?
My style icon is always changing but right now I’m looking at Françoise Hardy and Erin Wasson.
What’s the best decade for style?
I would say the ’60s. Late ‘60s/early ‘70s.
Boots or platforms?
Boots for sure.
Whats the favorite item in your closet?
Definitely my leather boots that I’m wearing right now.
What’s your go-to stage outfit?
Something that drapes, something that makes me feel like a magical goddess. I’ve been wearing a lot of black lately which is funny because I never really thought I looked good in black. I always thought it washed me out but I’ve been wearing a lot of layers with belts, turquoise, and something long. Maybe like a little transparent to get some of that with the lights. Work with the lights.
What’s the best place to find inspiration?
Right now it would definitely be on the road. I actually got home from tour a week ago and the first thing I did was jumped in the car and went to San Francisco to just like live out of the car for a week. I like being on the move, it’s inspiring.
Who is on your playlist right now? I am listening to the new Tame Impala record, the new Unknown Mortal Orchestra record, and I’m listening to Rodriguez.
What are you reading right now? I just got the Kim Gordon book that I’m going to be reading after I read Women Who Run With the Wolves.
What is your biggest accomplishment so far? Moving out of my mom’s house and renting a place in Silver Lake and filling it with all of the things that I love and feeling like an independent.
