1. NO ONE CARES
Ok not exactly true, but no matter how caught up you are about what to wear or whether you still have a sweet tan, people are actually more focused on their own new bad haircuts or their own sweet tans. Don’t fret about the attention of others unless you’re the new kid. In that case, like they say in Carrie, “They’re all going to laugh at you!” Nah, just kidding, you’re fine too.
2. DON’T BE FAKE ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL SUPPLIES
You don’t “NEED” a bunch of cool erasers. You probably do everything on computers now anyway. I always bought dumb stickers that I didn’t need that I later decided weren’t cool. Do your best to stay organized, but don’t buy a bunch of stuff to make it all a bigger mess.
3. DON’T STUNT TOO HARD ON DAY ONE
You may have created a whole new you over the summer and you’re ready to show off your new bangs or whatever. But keep in mind, you gotta keep it up for the next 10 months. Save something for week two at least.
4. STUNT TOO HARD ON DAY ONE
I say in all my “Real Talks” that every rule is meant to be broken. If you got a whole new outfit for this, who am I to tell you that isn’t the move? I think it is the move? Don’t listen to me, what do I know?!
5. HEY! YOU OVER THERE! LISTEN UP!
Yeah you! Pay attention to what your friends and teachers are saying. It’s probably important and tuning out is rude. I have a terrible attention span though, so I feel you.
6. STAY AT LEAST A LIL TRUE
Okay, so you bought yourself some chokers because you got a Tumblr over the summer. I get it. Okay, valid even. However, don’t go overboard with your new identity because you may have a completely different idea of who you are and what you like in a few months.
7. SQUASH THE BEEF AND BURY THE HATCHET
Whatever dumb “drama” you had from 6th grade wasn’t worth being angry about then and still isn’t now.
8. BE ON TIME JUST THIS ONCE
Your teachers will have it out for you the rest of the year if you’re late on the first day. As someone who is late for everything all the time, just get it right on day one at least. Come on!
9. ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, CALM DOWN!
One year when I was going into the 4th grade, I was really embarrassed that I was coming in with the same busted skate sneakers from the year before. I spent the whole night prior polishing them and trying to glue the soles back together. Needless to say, they looked better beat up and no one cared! At the end of the day, everything you do in your school years will be hilarious to you later on, so just keep it chill!
10. HAVE FUN!
This is one of the most exciting days of the school year. You don’t have to worry about big tests or projects yet and you get to see everyone again and catch up. School is totally what you make of it. You’ll do great!
