MIA, Lady Gaga, Sky Ferreira, and countless fashionistas rely on Aura Friedman for the royal crown treatment. Aura is an artist- the notorious stylist transforms each of her clients into a rich, vibrant canvas even Pablo Picaaso would envy. We asked the color expert to help us achieve fuss-free mermaid highlights in the comfort of our very own home.
SM: Hi Aura! Tell us about your first memory of DIY dying.
AF: My fist memory traces back to a bunch of blonde hair pieces that were left over in the salon from a Fashion Week prep. I practiced creating specific tones of hair color that were difficult to create with professional color. That’s when my peach, dusty rose, and rose gold tones were born.
Where do you find hairspiration for your colorful creations?
My boyfriend is an artist- he is always creating and that is very inspiring @owvbics (on Instagram). I am inspired by nature, fashion, film, and other artists as well.
How do you maintain a natural balance when trying to achieve bright, multi-colored locks?
I create a look that goes from darker to lighter or I add dimension.
Words of wisdom for first-time dyers who are ready to commit to color?
Make sure you always consult thoroughly with you colorist and be sure to let them know everything you have previously done to your hair.
Any hot hair trends to look out for in 2014?
Different tones of platinum blonde, red heads of all tones and levels, and rainbow hair done tastefully.
How to get Aura's mermaid extensions at home:
1. Cover a large workspace with a plastic drop cloth. Lay extensions flat on covered surface. (We recommend purchasing the lightest blonde clip-in extensions to achieve maximum color.)
2. Using a temporary dye (we love Manic Panic!) mix color with your favorite conditioner until desired shade is achieved.
3. Apply a thorough, heavy hand of dye/conditioner to the desired area of the hair extension using a tint brush.
4. Wait specified drying times and style extension as needed. Clip extension into your hair and get ready to cause major waves!
