It’s nearly impossible to not take notice of Danielle Mahoney, the Oklahoma native who was born to stand out. The self-proclaimed “biologically female drag queen” is all about drama, as evidenced by her affinity for sparkle, vintage clothing, and creating her costumes to suit her everyday fabulousness. We got a chance to chat with Danielle, and got the low-down on her inspiration for dressing and the ideology behind her “postmodern dollar store” style.
What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Danielle Mahoney and I am from Oklahoma. I’ve lived in New York for four years.
Describe your style in 3 words
Postmodern dollar store.
What do you think about when you put an outfit together?
I think about my latest obsession and try to communicate it through the clothes that I create or piece together. Ever since I was little, I would watch a movie and then become fascinated with making myself look like the main character. I would mimic what she wore using what I had around the house. I was lucky enough to have a family that always encouraged creativity and experimentation with clothing.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from my community of friends, treasures I find, current fashion and clothing of the past, movies, and theatre. A lot of my inspiration comes from drag culture.
What is your favourite place to shop?
For clothing that is already created, I love to shop at Beacon’s Closet and Gothic Renaissance. I work at both stores during the day, so I am perpetually shopping. Besides that, I mainly just shop for materials. I like to go to Canal Plastics, dollar stores, the wholesale district, fabric stores, and Home Depot.
What is your occupation?
Stylist, event host, costume designer, biologically female drag queen.
What do you love about your job?
Playing dress up!
What is your favourite Steve Madden shoe right now?
I adore the SPYCEE-R heels! They are covered in aurora borealis rhinestones, which are my favorite because they look so magical. They’re comfortable too!
Who are your personal style icons?
A pantheon of larger than life blondes-- Divine, Amanda Lepore, Daphne Guinness, Dolly Parton, and my grandma.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Staying up too late laughing and talking with my roommates while we make looks to wear to the next event.
Describe your high school style in 3 words
Vintage, wacky, shared (my best friend and I co-owned all of our clothes).
What bands/artists do you have on heavy rotation right now?
The Velvet Underground (RIP Lou Reed), Bjork, Madonna’s Ray of Light album, ARTPOP, and Whitney Houston.
What is your spirit animal?
