It Guy | Lontalius

Nobody captures the teenage experience with as much emotion as Eddie Johnston (aka Lontalius). The 18-year-old musician embraces his coming-of-age phase via his R&B-influenced tempos and sincere lyrics. With frequent comparisons to King Krule already (we see it in his style as well as his music), Lontalius is the artist to watch right now. Keep him on your radar.

Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration from the music that I like, but also emotions, sentiments.

What kind of sentiments?
I’m really interested in teenage emotions. Everyone looks back at their teenage years. It’s silly, but when you’re a teenager, it feels like the most important thing in the world.

What are your musical influences?
I really like R&B [and] rap, Drake and PartyNextDoor. I also grew up listening to bands like Wilco [and] Phoenix.

Who’s your favorite emerging artist?
I really Alessia Cara. She has a song about being seventeen.

What’s on your playlist right now?
We’re in New York, so I’m listening to a lot of Jay Z. I also listen to a lot of PartyNextDoor.

Favorite city you’ve toured to?
This is our first time playing shows overseas. We did LA and now New York. I love New York so far. I went to Tokyo on my way home from the UK just a few months ago, and really loved it.

Favorite show you’ve played?
We opened for Perfume Genius in Auckland back home. That was really special.

What are you reading right now?
I don’t really read books but I bought one about the emergence of the Berlin techno scene. I haven’t read it yet but it’s in my bag.

What is your spirit animal?
My friend made a joke yesterday, we were watching Monsters vs. Aliens, there was this animal that looked like a ginger cat but had butterfly wings. He joked that was my spirit animal.

Who do you Insta-stalk?
I really like this model, Luka Sabbat.

Most prized possession?
I have a Casio keyboard that my friend gave me. I use it on a lot of my songs.

What’s your biggest accomplishment so far?
Coming to New York. Coming from New Zealand, it’s a big deal.

What’s on your roster for the next few months?
I go back to LA on Sunday and I’m there for a few weeks, recording and stuff. Then I go to paris for the Red Bull Music Academy, do that for a few weeks. Then I go home for Christmas and then do all the summer festivals in New Zealand!
